What Happens in a Homeopathic Consultation? A Dublin Homeopath Explains
Updated: 2 hours ago

Your symptoms are the starting point
Before a first appointment, you may wonder how much of your health history to explain. Should you start with the complaint that brought you here, an earlier diagnosis, or something that changed recently? Start with what is troubling you most. You do not need medical language or a complete explanation of why it is happening.
At Homeopathic Clinic Dublin, I discuss your current symptoms alongside your personal health history, family history, daily routines and emotional wellbeing. I also ask when symptoms began and what appears to make them better or worse.
If sleep is your main concern, for example, try describing a recent night: when you went to bed, what happened while you were awake, and how you felt the following morning. These details tell me far more than the word "insomnia" on its own.
There is usually something behind a symptom. It may be bad news, a disappointment or a bereavement. It may be a shock from the past that keeps returning to mind. Sometimes it is simply daily worry that the mind cannot switch off from. At other times it is physical: a pain, an itch, or dreams that wake you during the night. Symptoms show themselves in many different ways, and each one deserves to be looked at in detail.
Before your appointment, it helps to note when your symptoms occur, what seems to change them, and how they affect your daily routine.
Inside your first consultation
Explaining what you want help with
Choose one concern to begin with, and explain what it is stopping you from doing.
If tiredness is troubling you, describe how it affects your day: finding it difficult to finish work, missing your evening walks, or needing to rest after household tasks. Specific examples like these give us a clear reference point, so that at your follow-up we can look back and discuss what has changed.
What makes symptoms better or worse?
Homeopaths use the word modalities for the factors that seem to ease or worsen symptoms.
Think about what you have actually noticed. Does discomfort change when you move or rest? Does it happen before or after meals? Does it feel different in the morning and in the evening?
You do not need to find a pattern where none is clear. "It varies, and I have not noticed why" is a perfectly useful answer.
Describe accompanying symptoms separately, too. If nausea occurs with a headache, explain which starts first and how long each lasts. If worry and poor sleep happen together, describe both, without feeling you must decide which caused the other.
We can explore your symptoms together with a timeline in mind. Very often this is how a pattern becomes visible.
Questions about your wider health and daily life
Questions may extend to appetite, sleep, diet, mood and daily habits. It helps to prepare a few notes about your usual routine, including anything that has changed recently.
For family history, simply list the conditions you know about. It is useful for me to know which major illnesses run in your family.
What happens afterwards
After the consultation, you will receive your prescription by email, with clear instructions on how to take the remedies and details of which pharmacies can supply them.
You will also be told when to book your follow-up consultation. Follow-ups are an important part of the process: they allow us to review how you responded, and to decide whether to continue, adjust or change the prescription according to your own progress.
How remedies are selected
Classical homeopathy involves comparing the whole picture a person describes with the descriptions found in homeopathic reference books — the Repertory, which is an index of symptoms, and the Materia Medica, which contains traditional remedy descriptions.
There is no standard remedy for a particular diagnosis. Two people who have received the same diagnosis may describe their experience in very different ways, and this is why the consultation takes the time that it does.
